Declare your cross-border money
If you bring more than 10.000 USD of cash into Russia, you might soon be committed to tell customs officials from where the money is and on what you intend to spend it.
That is a proposal from the Customs Service, newspaper Vedomosti reports. Today, the travelers bringing more than 10000 USD across the border are only obliged to fill out customs declarations. The current regime has an insufficient currency control, the customs service argues. According to the proposal, the travelers will be required to present documentation on the origin of the money. The measure must be taken in order to prevent criminals from using white washed money on terrorist activities, the customs officials say. Critics say however that the measure will not hinder criminals from bringing illegal money into the country, and that the regulation will rather hit law-abiding citizens.
