Russian coastguard vessel asked for Norwegian assistance near Svalbard.
The coastguard vessel was Friday escorted to the Longyearbyen harbour in Svalbard after it requested help from Norwegian authorities, reports NRK-Nordnytt. The Russian coastguard vessel got technical failure in the waters near Svalbard and couldn’t solve the problems in open waters. Since the vessel is an official vessel belonging to another state, they needed diplomatically clearance from Norwegian authorities to enter the territorial waters around Svalbard and go to harbour in Longyearbyen, reports Svalbardposten.
Nordsyssel, the vessel operated by Svalbard’s County Governor assisted the Russian coastguard into Longyearbyen.
The coastguard vessel was in the waters near Svalbard to control Russian fishing vessels in the area.
