Railway-port connection to be upgraded

The Russian Railways intend to lay double-track lines all through the Republic of Karelia in order to help boost the capacities of the Port of Murmansk.

300 million RUB will be spent on the railway upgrade by year 2015, head of the Russian Railway regional department, Viktor Stepov, said this week.

In a meeting with Governor of the Republic of Karelia, Mr. Stepov also confirmed that the railway upgrade is made in order to increase port capacities in Murmansk. With the double-line tracks, goods trains will be able to move both directions at far higher speed.

The investments will be made by the Russian Railways with support from the Russian Investment Fund, the administration of Karelia informs.
