Two-billion ruble upgrade of Arctic railway station

The Murmansk railway station will be reconstructed and integrated with the nearby sea port station before the 2016 city anniversary.

The plans include the development of a 27,000 square meter complex which is to house the railway station, the sea port station, as well as the city bus station. It is estimated to cost more than two billion RUB, a press release from the Murmansk regional government reads.

The Russian railway will allocate funding for the first part of the project, company representatives confirmed in a recent meeting with Governor Dmitry Dmitriyenko. The reconstruction is planned completed before the celebration of the 100 years anniversary of Murmansk in 2016.

-Over the next five years the city will radically change, it will get all the assets of a capital, Governor Dmitriyenko says. –Murmansk will become the biggest hub for transports and logistics in the High North, he adds.

A presidential decree on celebration of the Arctic city was signed by Dmitry Medvedev on April 1 this year. The federal government has set up an organizational committee in connection with the event.
