Finnish minister concerned about Nord Stream

Minister of Environment Paula Lehtomäki believes that the Russian-German Nord Stream pipeline through the Baltic Sea could have serious environmental impact on the local environment.

Ms Lehtomäki does not however believe that the gas pipeline will increase military tension or security risks in the region. The 1200 km long Nord Stream pipeline is planned built from Russian Vyborg to German Greifswald. The project is scheduled to come online in year 2010. According to plans, the pipeline will after year 2013 be fuelled partly with gas from the Shtokman field in the Barents Sea.
