First Shtokman platform under construction

The Vyborg shipyard outside Sankt Petersburg on Friday started construction of the first of the two platforms for the Shtokman field in the Barents Sea.

In a ceremony attended by high-ranking officials from Gazprom subsidiary Gazflot, the Vyborg shipyard officially started construction of the first of two platforms, to become key parts of the huge Shtokman project.

-We have today made another important step towards the conquering of the Russian Arctic shelf and the subsequent development of it into a new oil and gas region, Gazflot head Yuri Shamanov said, adding that only the newest, best and most environmentally friendly equipment will be used in the project.

Mr. Shamanov in his speech also said that Russia’s further development of Arctic resources will depend on the construction of new platforms, rigs and vessels, Gazprom reports in a press release.

While the Vyborg yard will construct the lower parts of the two Shtokman platforms, the upper parts will be constructed by the Samsung Heavy Industries in Korea
