Gazprom comes to North Sea

The deal on Wintershall’s inclusion in the Russian Urengoy field will give Gazprom a stake in several fields in the North Sea.

The memorandum on the asset swop signed in Sankt Petersburg on Thursday paves the way for Wintershall’s inclusion in the huge Russian Urengoy field in Western Siberia. In return Gazprom will get a stake in several of Wintershall’s fields in the North Sea, a press release from Gazprom reads.

It is not clear in which licenses in the North Sea Gazprom will be included.

The German-controlled Wintershall has been active on the North Sea shelf since the 1960s and today operates 25 oil and gas platforms in the Dutch part of the area and one platform in German waters. The company is also active in Norway and won ten licenses in the latest Norwegian license round. One of the company’s licenses is to a field in the Barents Sea, the Wintershall website informs.
