New Nord Stream partner in the pipeline

French energy company GDF Suez might become the fourth foreign partner in the Nord Stream pipeline project.

According to Reuters, the company last Friday confirmed that it is in talks with Gazprom over taking part in the North Stream gas pipeline project.

Company Chairman and Chief Executive Gerard Mestrallet told reporters that getting a stake in the Nord Stream pipeline will be important for the company to secure and strengthen gas supplies.

From before BASF/Wintershall and E.ON Ruhrgas holds 20 percent each of the Nord Stream joint venture. Gasunie has a 9 percent share. Gazprom controls the company with its 51 percent stake

The 1220 km long Nord Stream pipeline will be a direct Russian supply link to the EU. The Baltic underwater pipeline will be built between the Russian town of Vyborg and the German Greifswald.

Gas from the Shtokman field in the Barents Sea is planned to be a key supply base for the new pipeline.
