Putin wants “eco-friendly” nuclear plants

A new Federal nuclear technology program will assure the development of environmental-friendly nuclear power plants, according to a statement made by Russia’s Prime Minister on Thursday.

Vladimir Putin was quoted by Itar-Tass saying “New-generation technologies are to be developed under the programme so as to build more efficient and environment-friendly nuclear power plants.”

Putin said Russia will continue with its so-called closed uranium cycle, in other words; continue to reprocess spent nuclear fuel from the country’s nuclear power plants in order to re-use the uranium into new fuel for next generation reactors.

Russia has nine nuclear power plants in operation. The only one of them located within the Barents Region is Kola Nuclear Power Plant near the city of Polyarny Zori north of the Arctic Circle. Kola nuclear power plant operates four water cooled reactors.
