Relax - Kola NPP is safe
…but Rosenergoatom does not exclude the possibility that, in future, the oldest VVER-440 reactors will be shut down.
Recent safety inspections at Russia’s nuclear power plants, following the Fukushima accident in Japan, have not revealed any serious problems, Russia Today reports.
Vladimir Asmolov, Deputy General Director of Rosenergoatom, the state company that operates the Russia’s nuclear power plants, says the incpections have shown a high-degree of emergency preparedness.
Asmolov says that in the future terminating the operation of reactors of the first generation VVER-440 is possible. The two oldest reactors at Kola NPP are of such design.
- But currently these are Russia’s best power-generating reactors, Asmolov says to Russia Today.

The 30 years licence for Reactor No. 3 at Kola NPP has passed and the operators are now awaiting possible life-time extension.
