Yamal LNG for western markets

The liquified gas produced at the projected Yamal LNG plant will be offered to countries in the West, Gazprom´s Aleksandr Medvedev says.

Speaking at a conference on Russian LNG developments in Moscow this week, Gazprom Deputy Medvedev indicated that the projected Yamal plant will deliver round-the-year LNG supplies to Europe and North America, Oilru.com reports.

It has until now been expected that the gas will be sold first of all in the Asian markets, and several Asian companies have been named as possible project partners.

The Yamal LNG plant will be fuelled by gas from the South Tambey field, a huge deposit controlled by Novatek. Novatek in 2011 teamed up with French oil major Total in the project. The deal signed in October will make Total the main international partner in the project with a 20 percent share. In addition, Total will acquire a 12.08 percent shareholding in Novatek, a stake which will be increased to 15 percent within 12 months and to 19.40 percent within 36 months.

The launch of the project is due in 2016, representatives of Novatek maintain.

The Yamal LNG plant is not the only under planning in the Russian Arctic. A LNG plant is also projected as part of the Shtokman project, as well as on the coast of the Pechora Sea in the Nenets Autonomous Okrug.

According to Aleksandr Medvedev, Russia will by year 2030 account for 14 percent of the world´s LNG production.
