300 sunken ships in Kola Bay

Murmansk needs federal help to get rid of the nearly 300 sunken ships that fill up the Kola Bay. The vessels are both an ecological threat and a danger to navigation in the fjord.

The estimated 300 sunken and abandoned ships in the Kola Bay pose a serious threat to the environment of the area. The vessels threaten ship traffic in the area and are a major source of pollution of the waters. The sea bottom around the vessels has more than ten times higher levels of chemical substances than normal.

All larger operations in the Kola Bay can only be performed by federal structures, as regional structures according to Russian legislation lack the authority to do so. The regional authorities in Murmansk are suggesting that a federal program for clean-up up the fjord should be established, Arcticuniverse writes.
