400 reindeer drowned in icy waters
The reindeers were crossing a river in northern Sweden on their way to winter pastures when the thin surface ice cracked.
Reindeer herders in the region were taking around 3,000 animals across the river in Jokkmokk, a route that has been safely crossed on previous occasions, reports the Swedish news-site The Local.
-The ice suddenly gave way and hundreds of reindeer fell into the water, said Bertil Kielatis, chairman of the Sirges Sami village in Jokkmokk, to the Swedish newswire TT.
Sirges is Sweden’s largest Sami village with around 300 members and 90 herders.
