Arctic shelf study tour
A Russian research vessel will leave Murmansk in mid-July to study the extensions of the Siberian shelf.
The aim is to see if the undersea Lomonosov Ridge and the Mendeleev Rise in the central Arctic Ocean are extensions of the Siberian shelf. If so, Russia will claim exclusive economic rights to both areas, as stipulated under the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, reports The Voice of Russia.
The expedition to research the continental shelf will be on board the vessel “Akademik Fyodorov.” The vessel is said to leave the port of Murmansk on July 15th.
