Baltic Sea best in the north

The environmental situation in the Botnia Bay is better than in the more southern parts of the Baltic Sea, the Swedish World Wildlife Fund (WWF) confirms.

- Less farming and hence less runoff of nutrients in the Northern parts – the Gulf of Bothnia - provide better prerequisites for healthier waters compared to the south, says Åsa Andersson, Program Director for the Baltic Sea programme at the Swedish branch of the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). But the overall situation for the Baltic Sea is alarming. WWF recently released a report on expanding dead sea beds and this year’s Baltic Sea Barometer (2008 Baltic Sea Scorecard) shows that the countries’ efforts to combat the threats to the Baltic Sea are far from enough.”
