$70,000 brings you to the North Pole

Wondering where to go for vacation next year?

For the twentieth year in a row, Russian nuclear powered icebreakers will bring wealthy tourists to the North Pole next summer.

The largest of the Murmansk-based icebreakers, 50 Years of Victory, will sail from Murmansk in July 2011 with up to 128 passengers. The 15 day long expedition cross the Barents Sea before crashing into the Arctic ice-cap in the waters near Franz Josef’s Land and continues through the ice all the way to 90 degree north.

Environmentalists have stated strong criticism to the North Pole cruises claiming the operation of the icebreakers generates more spent nuclear fuel and radioactive waste in Russia.

The 75,000 horsepower icebreaker has two nuclear reactors.
