A nuclear plan for Murmansk Oblast

Murmansk Governor Yuri Yevdokimov today signed an agreement with Russia’s nuclear energy company Rosatom, which includes the intention to construct a new nuclear power plant in the region.

The agreement also includes the establishment of a new regional centre for the reprocessing of solid nuclear wastes, as well as infrastructure for the long-term storage of nuclear sub reactor compartments, spent nuclear fuel and radioactive wastes.

The agreement includes a number of points on how to manage and develop the nuclear power industry in the region and was signed in Murmansk by Governor Yevdokimov and Rosatom’s Sergey Kiriyenko.

Among the agreement points is the intention to build a new nuclear power plant in the region. From before, Rosatom is operating the Kola Nuclear Power plant in the town of Polyarnye Zori.

The agreement also includes the elaboration and implementation of development programmes for Atomflot, the service base for the nuclear powered vessels in the region.
