Aluminium plant in trouble?

A respected newspaper in Murmansk Oblast last week indicated that the Kandalaksha Aluminium Plant (KAZ) might be closed within 3-5 years. Now, the company management rebuffs the information.

It was the newspaper “Argumenty i Fakty”, which reported about the alleged plans for the closure of the plant, a unit in the Rusal company. The company management however rebuffs all information about a crisis.

Head of Rusal’s aluminium unit, Mr M. Erenburg says to the press that this is nothing but unfounded rumours. –There are no such plans, he stresses. -The KAZ is a stable company with a strong and professional work staff, which fulfils the [company] plans, he adds, newspaper “Niva” reports.

At the same time, the company does not exclude that the plant will experience major cuts in staff.

The KAZ runs on cheap energy from the Kola Nuclear Power Plant. In 2006 production amounted to 75,000 tons of aluminium. 1300 people work in the plant.
