Animal disease leads to strengthened border control

An outbreak of African hog cholera on the Kola Peninsula has lead to increased control on the Norwegian-Russian border.

The Norwegian Food Safety Authority reports that customs control on the border will be intensified because of reported outbreaks of the animal disease African hog cholera at pig farms in Severomorsk and Arkhangelsk, Nationen writes.

It is illegal to bring meat and meat products from Russia to Norway. Norwegian authorities have placed “amnesty garbage cans” on the Storskog border-crossing point, where travelers can place illegal foodstuffs without risking legal persecution.
