Arkhangelsk industry fires hundreds

More than 1200 people are in danger of loosing their jobs at the Arkhangelsk Sawmill and Wood Processing Plant. Also the Onega Sawmill might have to fire several hundreds of its employees.

In an open letter to the federal government, the regional governor and parliament, the workers of the Arkhangelsk plant say that 1200 people are in danger of loosing their jobs at the plant, Arnews.ru reports. The company has earlier announced that it will have to dismiss all workers after 23 March because of stalled production.

The workers are until then offered 2/3 of their salaries.

Also the Onega Sawmill and Wood Processing Plant has major difficulties following the dropping demands and lower prices. The plant might in 2009 have to cut staff with 500 people, a representative of the company’s labour union says to Arnews.ru.
