Arkhangelsk mayor awaits dismissal
The city mayor of Arkhangelsk might be dismissed by the end of this month, the press service of the Arkhangelsk city administration informs.
Meanwhile, the arrested city leader has started a hunger strike, as a protest against the long-dragged court case against him. The city administration confirms that the mayor will be dismissed should the case against him not be completed by the end of February. In that case, mayor’s elections will be held in May this year. Mayor Aleksandr Donskoy has been under heavy pressure from regional authorities since he in late 2006 announced that he intended to run for the 2008 Russian presidency. Mr. Donskoy has been charged on three points for having been engaged in illegal business activities, falsified his university diploma and of misuse of powers. The mayor has been under arrest since early August. He is now awaiting the courts handling of his appeal in the diploma case.
