Arkhangelsk Port eyes bigger stake in Arctic shipping

The Arkhangelsk Sea Trade Port will significantly increase shipping in connection with the development of Arctic oil and gas projects, port director Viktor Vorobyov says. The port might also become a new Russian hub for international container shipping.

Mr. Vorobyov says to Itar-Tass that shipping with oil and gas-related goods are likely to by far exceed shipping with forestry products. This year, the amount of coastal shipping will total 600,000 tons, which includes goods both for Norilsk Nickel and the oil industry.

The port director says that a cooperation agreement signed with Gazprom late 2007 will have major importance for the port.

The Port of Arkhangelsk is also believed to become a northern Russian hub for container shipping. The port has both available facilities and access to railway capacities.

The container shipping is a central item in the Northern Maritime Corridor project
