British delegation visits Murmansk and Severomorsk

A British delegation headed by the British Consul General in St. Petersburg Gareth Ward is currently visiting Murmansk and Severomorsk.

In Murmansk the delegation met with Murmansk Oblast Governor Dmitry Dmitriyenko, who informed the guests about the region’s possibilities for investments in connection with the establishment of an economic zone in the Port of Murmansk and the development of the Shtokman gas field, Murmanskpress.ru reports.

The plans for the visit to Murmansk includes a visit to the so-called British Cemetery – the burial place of British troops who were sent to Russia in 1918-1920 to support the White Russians against the Bolsheviks after the revolution. The troops held the northern cities of Murmansk and Arkhangelsk for a time, before the British government decided to withdraw its forces.

The delegation later travels to Severomorsk, where it will meet Commander of the Northern Fleet Vice Admiral Nikolay Maksimov and visit a cemetery where six World War II Commonwealth airmen are buried, RIA Novosti reports.

Severomorsk was one of the three harbors in northern Russia used for Allied lend-lease supplies during World War II.
