Cargo vessel might be turned into drilling rig

The Murmansk Shipping Company is considering to turn the dry cargo vessel “Ivan Papanin” into a drilling rig, a company representative confirms.

Speaking at the SevTek conference in Murmansk last week, company representative Aleksandr Kandakov confirmed that the Murmansk Shipping Company is considering to turn the 166 meter long “Ivan Papanin” into a drilling rig, newspaper Polyarnaya Pravda reports.

Mr. Kandakov also indicated that his company is interested in joining forces with foreign companies in the project. The plans were mentioned in talks with Canadian business representatives, the newspaper writes. The “Ivan Papanin” has a deadweight of 10,125 tons. It is built in 1990.

The “Ivan Papanin” will not be the first dry cargo vessel turned into a drilling rig. From before, the Murmansk Shipping Company has been engaged in the transformation of the nuclear-powered container ship “Sevmorput” into a drilling rig.
