City mayor might get three years in jail
State prosecutors demand three years of prison for Arkhangelsk city mayor Aleksandr Donskoy for the alleged abuse of office powers.
The prosecutor announced the requested punishment in a court meeting in the Arkhangelsk Oktyabrsky court on Wednesday, Yulia Shevchenko, senior aide to the regional prosecutor, told Itar-Tass. Donskoy’s lawyers insist on their client’s innocence. The mayor is charged for reported violations of city legislation by arranging security for himself and his family at the city budget’s expense. - He tapped the city budget to cover the cost of security services, causing a damage of more than four million roubles in the period from April, 2005 until May, 2007, the investigators said. Mr. Donskoy himself says the case against him is politically motivated and initiated by regional Governor Nikolay Kiselyov.
