Cutting number of federal officials

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has signed a decree reducing the number of federal officials by 20 percent until 2013.

According to the decree, the number of federal officials is to be reduced by 5% in 2011 and 2012 and then by 10% in 2013, the Kremlin web site reads.

According to RIA Novosti, the initiative could save up to 40 billion rubles (€984 million) out of the Russian federal budget. The number of federal officials in Russia almost doubled in the past five years from around 600,000 in 2005 to over 1.1 million in 2010.
