Deputy Minister for Natural Resources visits Norway

Russian Deputy Minister for Natural Resources Sergey Donskoy is visiting Norway for a meeting in the joint Russian-Norwegian environmental commission.

The commission plans to discuss projects within the Norwegian-Russian program on protection of the environment, web site Oilru.com writes. Biodiversity, emission reductions, protection of the cultural heritage and climate change are other issues up for discussion at the meeting.

The participants in the meeting will also be discussing Norwegian-Russian cooperation on protection of the border area between the two countries, especially the joint program for monitoring of the environmental situation in the Pasvik wildlife preservation area.

The minister’s two days long visit also includes meetings with the leadership of Norwegian oil and gas company Statoil and a trip to the Troll-B oil platform outside Bergen. Statoil is one of the shareholders in Shtokman Development, the company established to develop the Shtokman gas deposit in the Barents Sea.

Norway and Russia have cooperated within the field of environment since 1988 when a first government agreement on environment was signed. The cooperation is today developed within the frames of the Norwegian-Russian Environmental Commission.
