Election loser appeals to President

Larisa Bazanova, who narrowly lost last week’s city mayor’s elections in Arkhangelsk, has written an open letter to President Dmitrii Medvedev where she calls for the direct involvement of the state leader in the scandal elections.

In her letter, Ms Bazanova writes that the election is “an extreme example of legal nihilism”.

–I am sure that many people, who would like to take power in an illegal way, keep a close eye on the elections in Arkhagelsk, she maintains.

-If it all end up this way, it will be a clear signal to the ones who are ready to take local power with the help of a recount of votes and with the help falsification of elections, she adds

Ms. Bazanova was originally declared winner of the elections by the local election commission. The results showed that she had won with only 70 more votes than acting city mayor Viktor Pavlenko.

Mr. Pavlenko, however, demanded a recount of the casted votes and the new results showed that he had won with 37,47 percent support against Larisa Bazanova’s 37,17 percent. Only 18,22 percent of the electorate went to the polls in the elections.
