Election time in Russian border municipality
The people in Pechenga Rayon, the Russian municipality bordering Norway and Finland, in March head to the ballot box to elect a new Head of the municipality administration.
Three candidates are fighting about the post – one from the ruling political party in Russia, United Russia, and two independent candidates, web site B-port.com reports. The candidate from United Russia is current Mayor of Zapolyany Vladimir Ogienko. Zapolyarny is the largest town in Pechenga Rayon.
In January 2010 the sitting Head of Pechenga Rayon received strong critics from prosecutors, who in a court verdict said that local authorities have failed to effectuate a number of programmes adopted by the local legislative council, MBNews.ru reported.
