Environmentalists fined in Shtokman-protest

A group of 12 environmentalists from the Norwegian Nature and Youth organisation and the Nature League have been fined 2000 RUB (55 EUR) for their participation in yesterday’s protest against the laying of a gas pipeline through the Khibiny mountains.

The environmentalists were yesterday detained by police in the town of Apatity, Murmansk Oblast, and questioned for three yours. Later, police officials showed up in the camp site of the protesters and continued interrogations all though the night. All the foreign environmentalists were each fined 2000 RUB. The protest held in Apatity had in advance been approved by local authorities. Police says the protesters were fined because of “violations of their travel permits” to Russia, Murman.ru reports. The environmental organisation protest against the planned laying of the Shtokman gas pipeline through the Khibiny mountains, arguing that the vulnerable mountain massif should get status as national park.
