EU eyes more climate cooperation with Russia
The EU hopes to see Russia teaming up with the Union in climate issues ahead of upcoming international climate negotiations. This week, a delegation from the EU Parliament’s Climate Change Committee visited Moscow.
-In view of the importance of Russia as a key economic and political actor on the international scene and of the crucial role it will play in the context of a future international climate agreement, we would like to learn about the climate change challenges it faces, said Mr Guido Sacconi, Chairman of the Climate Change Committee prior to the visit, adding that there is need for a better understanding of Russian position and plans – both at the domestic and international level.
-We know, for instance, that the Russian President has recently requested the government to elaborate policies and measures to reduce the energy intensity of the Russian economy by at least 40 percent by 2020. This is a very interesting initiative and we would like to find out more about the plans to implement it, Mr. Sacconi said in a press release published at Europa.eu.
The visit comes few weeks before negotiations for a post-Kyoto framework on climate change at the UN Conference in Poznan in December 2008
