EU resumes Russia talks
European Union leaders will this Friday resume partnership talks with Russian President Medvedev in Nice. The summit will be a chance for the sides to overcome East-West tensions following the Georgia conflict and revitalize political cross-border cooperation.
In keeping with the conclusions of the Extraordinary European Council meeting on 1 September, the EU Council requested an assessment of the different dimensions of EU-Russia relations. This EU-Russia summit this week will review the implementation of these conclusions, particularly with regard to negotiations of a future enhanced agreement which should replace the current Partnership and Cooperation Agreement, a press release from EU chair France reads.
All EU-member states, except Lithuania, agreed to restart talks with Russia. The talks have been deadlocked since the Russian incursion in Georgia in early August this year. Then, the talks had just been restarted after a long period of internal EU disagreement.
