Finland in favour of EU expansion to the north

Finland supports the idea of an expansion of the European Union to the north, the Finnish Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen said at an international conference on the future of the Barents Region in Oulo, Finland today.

In his opinion, there are no barriers to EU membership for Norway and Iceland, although these countries have not applied for membership yet. Mr Vanhanen believes this will happen in the future, as an expansion of EU will be part of EU’s “Arctic policy”.
