Finland rejected Russian fishing in Lake Inari

Finnish authorities have rejected a request from a group of Russian fishermen to fish in the Lake Inari in Finnish Lapland.

A group of twenty fishermen from Murmansk has applied for permission to come to Lake Inari next summer. However, the local Forests Administration, as well as the local fishing council, wanted it otherwise and turned down the fishermen’s request. The Forest Administration argues that the Russian fishermen wanted to catch too big volumes. The Russians declared their wish to fish over a 180 day period, and that each of them wanted to catch 50 kilos per day. Chairman in the Forest Administration, Mr. Martti Kangasniemi, says to Yle that such a request would have been turned down also if the applicant was a local Finnish group. The Inari Lake is the third biggest lake in Finland. It is a major tourist attraction and is used extensively for sport fishing. Photo: Siida.fi
