Finland seeks bigger role in EU foreign policy

The Finnish government intends to send 25 of its best civil servants to the EU’s new foreign policy power centre, the External Action Service.

Pertti Torstila, secretary of state in the country’s foreign ministry, said Monday that Finland will send up to 25 civil servants to serve in the EU’s planned new external action service. -We are aiming to have our best resources serve there, he said, Newsroom Finland reports. Mr Torstila added that the government wanted Finnish civil servants to serve in posts that were particularly interesting from Finland’s point of view. Provided all member states ratify the Lisbon treaty, the union is to merge the current posts of the EU council’s high representative for foreign affairs and the commission’s external affairs commissioner and create a new foreign service for the new foreign policy supremo to lead.
