Finland, USA discussed Russian security proposal

The Russian proposal to join forces about a new alternative European security treaty was on the agenda when Finnish Foreign Minister Alexander Stubb met with U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

In the meeting, Foreign Minister Stubb said that that “there can be no compromise on the basic principles of European security structures”. At the same time he highlighted the importance to listen with open ears to the Russian security proposals, Yle reports. Mr. Stubb after the meeting confirmed that Secretary Rice sees no need in Europe for new institutions or security arrangements, but that discussions still are necessary. “Nobody wants to close doors and to say that we don’t want to listen to what Russia proposes. However, many are asking questions about what the proposal might include, what it means for European security structures, and what the motives are.” Stubb said. The OSCE foreign ministers will discuss the matter in Helsinki on Thursday.
