Finnish interest in Belkomur

Finnish companies are interested in the quickest possible launch of the Belkomur railway project, the press service of the Russian State Duma reported after a meeting with Finnish interests.

The Belkomur railway project was recently presented to Finnish companies in Moscow, as part of a meeting on strategic partnerships between northern Russian territories, the Urals and Finland.

The press-service of the State Duma Committee on the Problems of the Northern territories and Far East states that the negotiations clearly indicate that Finnish partners would like to see the project launched as soon as possible. The Finnish party believes that the project can be interrelated with the development of wood-processing industry in Finland and that it will strengthen economic relations between two countries.

Currently the Belkomur project is awaiting approval in the Ministry of Finance. At the same time, the project still lacks the necessary documentation which alone will have a cost of 6-8 billion RUB. The Perm Krai, Komi Republic and Arkhangelsk Oblast are planning to get these sums from the federal Investment Fund.

The Belkomur railway will connect Siberia and Ural with the federal ports of Murmansk and Arkhangelsk and will make goods transport on the route 800 km shorter than with existing transport routes. The railway will be constructed in public-private partnership.
