Finnish North might team up with Murmansk
Industrial developments in the Barents Region might prepare the ground for a new Russian-Finnish railway line, as well as two new direct flights between northern Finland and Murmansk.
According to news agency STT, a Finnish government working group in a new report expresses support for the construction of a new railway line between Finnish Salla and Russian Alakurtti. If Russia shows the necessary support for the project, Finland should commission a more detailed report on costs, benefits and funding, the working group members say. In addition, the working group also believes it will be worth looking into the establishment of non-stop flights between Rovaniemi and Murmansk, as well as between Oulo and Murmansk. The reports also reads that it might be demand for a passenger rail service between Joensuu in Finland and the Russian city of Petrozavodsk (Republic of Karelia).
