Finnish unemployment on the rise

Unemployment deepened in Finland last year. The average unemployment rate in 2009 was 8.2 percent, while it was 6.4 percent in 2008, according to Statistics Finland and the Ministry of Employment and the Economy.

Some 206.000 people in Finland were unemployed at the end of 2008, Yle.fi reports. Unemployment among youth rose considerably. In December 2009, 20.2 percent of young people between the ages of 15 and 24 were unemployed- This is up 7.8 percentage points from December 2008.
