Food prices rise ten times faster in Russia than EU
The price increase on foodstuffs in Russia was 5.8 percent in the period January-April, almost ten times higher than in the European Union, were the increase was 0.6 percent.
According to the Russian Federal State Statistics Service the price rise was highest for foodstuffs like fruit (17 percent), sugar and sugary foods (12.7 percent) and vegetables (11.6 percent), news paper Vedomosti reports. In Europe prices on these foodstuffs rose with respectively 1.9, 1.5 and 4.6 percent.
In Russia the price of fish rose with 9.4 percent, while in the EU it fell with 1 percent. Also bread, milk and eggs have become more expensive in Russia and cheaper in Europe.
According to experts, the price increase in Russia is connected with higher prices on public services and railroad transport. The latter has increased with 20-25 percent since the beginning of the year.
