Foreign agents seek secrets from Sevmash

Sergei Stepura, head of FSB in the Arkhangelsk Region, says foreign intelligence services continue to try to obtain classified information on the nuclear submarine construction shipyard Sevmash.

Stepura told reporters last week that several foreign intelligence agents, as well as persons suspected of working on behalf of foreign intelligence agencies had been spotted around sensitive areas.

Sevmash is located in Severodvinsk near Arkhangelsk. It is Russia’s largest construction yard for nuclear powered submarines.

According to Sergei Stepura, the countries involved in the intelligence include the United States, some of its NATO allies and specific Asia-Pacific states. Without giving the name, Stepura also said a criminal case had been opened against a regional law enforcement officer under the provisions of the Official Secrets Act.

Also last Desember, BarentsObserver reported that Arkhangelsk FSB head, Sergei Stepura, highlighted foreign spy activites against Sevmash, as one of the major intelligence threats in the Arkhangelsk region.
