French PM: High North increasing in strategic importance

France’s Prime Minister François Fillon ended his two-day visit to Norway yesterday, hinting at increased French investment, especially in future projects in the Barents Sea.

- The High North is of significant economic and strategic importance, as well as regarding environmental matters, Fillon said at a press conference in Oslo after visiting Statoil’s LNG plant at Melkøya outside Hammerfest, web site The Foreigner writes.

Fillon told his Norwegian counterpart Jens Stoltenberg he was very impressed by the technological challenges, the high level of security and the environmental matters that are taken into consideration at the plant.

He also pointed out that French investors are interested in increasing their funding of current projects, especially future Barents Sea opportunities.
