From Murmansk to South Ossetia

Volunteers from all over Russia sign up for military service in South Ossetia. In Murmansk more than thirty young men addressed the regional recruitment units. Three of them will be sent towards the Caucasus.

The main military action in South Ossetia might be over, but a number of young Russians still contact military authorities and offer their services. Only few of them are accepted, however. -We do not want “hotheads”, Yevgenii Taraburin from the Murmansk military commissariat says to newspaper Murmanskii Vestnik. Contract service is for professionals, he adds. One of the chosen three volunteers says to Murmanskii Vestnik that he “could not bear to sit quiet seeing Russians being killed”. Although recruited, he might not end up in South Ossetia, however. Mr. Taraburin says it will be up to the respective unit to decide which soldiers to engage. Mr. Taraburin says he does not possess information about soldiers from Murmansk having fought in the recent fighting in South Ossetia. He does not exclude however that two locals, who served in military units outside Pskov – the units which sent men to the troubled region – might have been engaged in the fighting.
