General warns against militarization of Arctic
Russia will respond to any attempts to militarize the Arctic, head of the Russian Armed Forces General Nikolai Makarov said today.
“Overall, we are looking at how far the region will be militarized. Depending on that, we’ll then decide what to do,” General Nikolai Makarov said in an international arms fair in Abu Dhabi today, Reuters reports with reference to Interfax.
The warning comes as Nato is stepping up its focus on the Arctic. As BarentsObserver reported recently, NATO will in the years to come seek to enhance its presence in the strategic region. A background for the increased focus is both the rapidly proceeding climate chance, as well as the bigger international interest in regional natural resources.
