Governor accused of election law violation

The Communist Party in Arkhangelsk Oblast has filed a complaint against regional Governor Ilya Mikhalchuk to the Russian Prosecutor’s office. The governor is illegally agitating for the United Russia party, the communists say.

-Governor Mikhalchuk is seriously violating federal law, member of the State Duma from the Communist Party, Sergey Obukhov, says to the Klub Regionov news site. He maintains that Mr. Mikhalchuk is illegally agitating for the United Russia Party. Also Communist Party leader Gennady Zyuganov has previously accused the Arkhangelsk governor of violations of the federal election law, according to which the governors are not allowed to engage in the election campaign. Regional parliament elections are to be held in Arkhangelsk Oblast on March 1. -When touring the region, the governor is openly agitating for the United Russia, Mr. Obukhov underlines.
