Governor Dmitriyenko met Minister of Defence Serdyukov

Army and navy personnel reductions will be carried through in a controlled manner says Minister of Defence Anatoly Serdyukov.

Murmansk Oblast Governor Dmitry Dmitriyenko has met Minister of Defence Anatoly Serdyukov to discuss reforms and cut-backs in the army and navy and use of the ministry’s land areas for development of the Shtokman project and Murmansk Transport hub.

According to Serdyukov, the Ministry of Defence will take all possible measures to make the planned personnel reductions in the army and navy as smooth as possible for the regions, web site ProMurman.ru reports.

In course of the next two years, the number of students at military academies will be reduced, and officers who have served long enough to obtain all pensions will be laid off first.

Dmitriyenko and Serdyukov also discussed civilian use of military land areas for the major infrastructure projects that are on the threshold of being realized in Murmansk Oblast – Shtokman and Murmansk Transport Hub. Serdyukov essentially agreed to this, and in the near future a group of representatives from the ministry will visit Murmansk Oblast to draw out the final approach.
