Governor does not believe in election reform

Murmansk Governor Yuri Yevdokimov does not believe in a return to direct governor’s elections in Russia. This is not the time for radical political changes, the governor says.

-I agree with the ones who say that this is not the time for radical political changes, the governor says in a press release. –The focus on reducing the negative social and economic effects of the global financial crisis should be done within the current power system, he underlines.

The issue of direct popular governor’s elections was recently raised by Moscow City Mayor Yuri Luzhkov. The powerful city mayor believes Russia now should return to the system of governor’s elections. Russia’s leading political party United Russia does however not want a change from today’s system of governor’s appointment, the party website informs.

Vladimir Putin abolished the system of direct governor’s elections in his first period as president.
