Governors to get bigger say in security affairs
After having been gradually deprived of responsibilities over a number of years, Russian regional administrations might now again get a bigger say in security affairs.
According to a decree issued by President Dmitry Medvedev last weekend, the regional leaders will be responsible for organizing regular coordinating meetings between regional authorities and representatives of law enforcement bodies.
The meetings will give the governors better overview of local security affairs and also to a certain degree raise their level of power over authorities like the FSB and the Interior Ministry, newspaper Nezavisimaya Gazeta reports.
Over the last decade, Russian regional authorities have gradually lost most of their powers over law enforcement affairs. Both the FSB, the Interior Ministry officials, prosecutors and court judges are today subjected to federal authorities.
