Halonen: Big things coming up in the North
In her meeting with Murmansk Governor Yuri Yevdokimov yesterday, Finnish President Tarja Halonen said that the ground is prepared for an industrial boom in Murmansk Oblast and Finnish Lapland.
The quiet life of the North is coming to an end, Ms Halonen said, Rosbaltnord.ru reports. According to Governor Yevdokimovs press secretary, the Finnish president expressed major hopes for the two regions. In the south of Finland, we see that big things are coming up in the North, Ms. Halonen said. The quite life is coming to an end, and we have to be fully aware of the fact that the preconditions are there for a major boost in industrial and social issues, she added. According to Governor Yevdokimov, the most prospective fields of cooperation between the two regions are within energy, sea and air transport, mining industry, construction, logistics, shipbuilding and repair, as well as tourism.
