Hardships for Arkhangelsk Port

The cargo turnover in Arkhangelsk Port has decreased with nearly 32 percent this year.

The overall cargo turnover in Arkhangelsk Port decreased with 31.8 percent to only three million tons in the period January to November 2009, web site Portnews.ru reports.

Turnover of timber and oil products have increased somewhat, but the large decrease in handling of coals – 70 percent – led to an overall decline for the port.

A total of 1776 vessels visited the port in the period – a downturn of 15 percent.

Arkhangelsk port Captain Nikolay Gurinov has earlier said that the volume of cargo transhipment is expected either to remain unchanged in 2010 or show an insignificant increase, BarentsObserver reported.
